Thousands of students receive A-Level results

Thousands of young people across Northern Ireland will receive their AS and A-Level results today. 

About 30,000 pupils sat the exams this year and are expected to be able to access results online, however many will still travel to schools and colleges. 

Grades are expected to remain on a similar trend to recent years, with girls outperforming boys and pupils in Northern Ireland being graded higher than their counterparts in England and Wales.

Maths is expected to remain the most popular A-level subject with a rise in so called STEM subjects in recent years.

Christina Kelly from the Department for Economy's careers team has this advice id you don't manage to get the grades you were after: 

Many pupils getting their grades will pursue other options, including apprenticeships, entry into further education, employment or a gap year.

Frances O’Hara, Head of the Careers Service, said: “I would encourage students, to take advantage of the professional advice and guidance available from your careers adviser to help you take the next step.

"A comprehensive guidance service is available for those hoping to progress into post 16 and 18 opportunities at this time.

"Young people and parents can also access useful information through the Careers Service website: www.nidirect.gov.uk/careers which also contains contact details of careers offices throughout Northern Ireland. 

“If you need immediate advice and guidance following your exam results I recommend you use the online webchat facility. You can contact a careers adviser by clicking on the “Chat with an adviser” button or you can speak with an adviser by calling 0300 200 7820.

“Webchat and phone opening hours will be extended and advisers will be available via webchat and telephone from 9.00am to 7.00pm on Thursday 16th and Friday 17th August and again on Thursday 23th and Friday 24th August.”
