Six people have died and 28 have been injured after gunmen opened fire on a funeral at a church in Jordan.

It took place at a Greek Orthodox church in Karak governorate, about 110 miles south of the capital Amman.

A witness told TV channel Al Mamlaka that two men - one carrying a rifle and another a ‌pistol - opened fire for several minutes.

The station said the men had got out of a vehicle before attacking the funeral at Hamoud church.

Local reports initially said seven people had been killed, but Jordan's public security directorate later said there were six fatalities.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility and authorities haven't yet said who was responsible.

Jordan's King Abdullah said the authorities would punish those behind the attack "with an iron fist".

Such attacks are extremely rare in Jordan.

Christians make up a minority of Jordan's population. However, the country is home to several biblical sites that attract Christian pilgrims from around the world.

In 2016, Islamic State militants killed 14 people in an attack on the Karak Castle, a popular tourist site.
