Danske Bank Women's Championship holders Linfield have got their defence of the trophy off to a winning start.

The Blues kicked off the new campaign last night with a 5-2 win against visiting Sion Swifts.

Kirsty McGuinness scored twice, including a penalty.

Cliftonville's Celine Curtis went one better with a hat-trick in the Reds' 3-1 victory over newly-promoted Ballymena.

Lauren Redpath says she wants to make it back to Europe with the Reds, her new club.

She's moved to the Reds from Newry City, and played in the Champions League last year.

There was also a hat-trick for Trudi Harbinson as Newry City won 4-2 away to Crusaders Strikers.

All seven new signings from Brazil played for the champions of two years ago.

And Newry manager Stephen Hatfield says they could have a key role in this season's title bid.
