Ditch your old ‘duds’ and donate them to Belfast Zoo this Christmas!

Are you doing a clear out before Christmas and thinking of dumping some old clothes that are gathering dust in your wardrobe?

Whether it’s a knitted nightmare from granny, last season’s Gucci or your old bedsheets, you can donate your old clothes and bedding to Belfast Zoo’s gorillas and chimpanzees!

Zoo curator, Julie Mansell, explains “The chimps and gorillas love to play with old clothing and bedding; playing, snuggling up and even shredding the items.  These materials are a great form of enrichment for our apes.  Enrichment is a key part of providing the best care possible for our animals.  We use a range of different enrichment techniques to encourage natural behaviours and to provide stimulation for our animals, including basic enclosure design, artificial termite mounds, frozen treats, scent bags, wobble feeders and much more!”

You can help provide enrichment for all the zoo’s animals by donating other enrichment items including:

  • Logs
  • Cardboard carpet tubes
  • Cardboard tubes
  • Hanging baskets
  • Unbreakable mirrors
  • Pine cones
  • Sacks
  • Bungee cord
  • Brush/mop heads
  • Netting
  • Barrels
  • Christmas trees
