Drop-in event for Senior Citizens in Omagh

An information event for senior citizens is to take place at the Public Services Centre in Omagh later.

The drop-in event will run from 10AM until 3PM - and will see a range of agencies attending.

There will be advice on everything from home-heating to health - as well as information on wider service available to older people.

Chairperson of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Mary Garrity, says it's about making senior citizens feel included.

"As you get older you can feel very isolated - we don't want that for the elderly people in our district," she said.

"We want to be thinking of them at all times, so this gives them a great opportunity to meet other older people and the services that are available to them and to strike up a rapport with them also," she added.

Organisations taking part in the event include Omagh Independent Advice Services, Western Homes Environmental Assessment Project, the local Policing & Community Safety Partnership, Omagh Leisure Complex, O’Kane’s Plumbing & Electrics, South West Age Partnership, Red Cross Neighbourhood Links and staff from the Drink Wise Age Well Programme. 

The event is free and aims to encourage social participation among older people as well as improve their health and well-being.

Encouraging older residents of the district to attend the event, the Chairperson of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, Cllr Mary Garrity, said that it was an excellent opportunity to find out about the supports available.

“This information event is well timed, before winter sets in, to ensure that our older people are helped and supported to feel healthier, lead more active lives and feel more secure and engaged in their local community”, she said.
