Elderly priest unsure if he will remain at targeted parochial house

A priest - whose parochial house was targeted in a sectarian attack - has spoke of his "disbelief" after what's happened.

"First of all, it was disbelief that this could happen - at this point in time, I thought we were well past all of that. And then I was just in a state of shock."

The words of Father Joe McVeigh - who at 70 years of age, and now a semi-retired priest in County Fermanagh - returned to his residence at Tattygar House in Lisbellaw on Sunday evening to find several windows had been smashed.

Repairs for the damage are estimated at around £1,000.

Police say they are investigating the incident - which happened between 4pm and 8pm on Sunday the 13th November.

"A number of ground floor windows were smashed," a police statement read.

The PSNI also confirmed they're treating this disturbance as a "hate crime".

And now, Fr. McVeigh says he's unsure whether or not he'll remain at the parochial house - given his history of heart problems.

"I was asked if I'd like to come out here, as opposed to a busy house in the town, you know in order to give me some peace and respite out in this house," the rural priest said.

"It was going, it was fine. But now [after this] I'm not sure whether I'll be able to stay here or not," he added.
