Emotional reunion for missing dog and owner after cliff side rescue

One local dog owner had an emotional reunion with their missing pet yesterday following a dramatic cliff side rescue.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Sandy, had been missing from her Coleraine home for two days after disappearing during a walk in Ballintoy.

Owner, Paula Mulgrew, was searching the area with her partner, calling Sandy’s name when they heard a bark in response.

After spotting Sandy stranded at the bottom of the cliff they called for help from Coleraine and Portstewart Coastguard before beginning to make their way down the steep edge. 

Crews responded shortly after and winched both dog and owners to safety.

A spokesperson for the Coastguard warned owners against attempting to rescue stranded pets if they fall over the edge:

"A Coastguard Rope Rescue Technician was lowered over the cliff and both owner and dog were winched to safety.

"As he emerged from our special dog rescue bag, Sandy was given water and dog biscuits (which we carry for just such occasions).

"This incident reinforces a key safety message: please keep your dog on a tight lead when near cliffs; stay away from the edge; and, if the worst does happen, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
