Man dies in A6 Derry to Belfast road crash

A man in his 30's has died following a crash on the main Derry to Belfast road.

It happened on the A6 Foreglen Road, between Claudy and Dungiven, at around 6.30am this morning. 

Councillor Tony McCaul is a relative of the man, he told Q Radio:

"The family is absolutely devastated, the community is in shock and his parents grief is beyond words. 

"It's a devastating time for them and I'm sure that the communities in Gortnaghey and Drum will rally around to support them and offer all the help that they need."

MLA Caoimhe Archibald expressed her sympathy with the man's family, she said: 

"This is the second death on the A6 in weeks and as we enter into the winter months, I would urge all road users to exercise care and caution on the roads at all times and to allow for extra travelling time if conditions are poor.

"The A6 is a very important commuter and haulage route so I will be meeting with the Infrastructure Minister to discuss the broader road safety issues on this stretch of the road." 

The road is expected to remain closed in both directions for several hours as forensic officers examine the scene.

Traffic heading towards Londonderry is being diverted via Foreglen Village, meanwhile, traffic travelling towards Dungiven is being diverted at the Junction of Ballyhanedin Road.

The PSNI has appealed to anyone who witnessed the collision to contact officers at the Collision Investigation Unit on 101.
