Omagh-born boxing official slammed by Paddy Barnes

Michael Gallagher is embroiled in controversy over judging at bout on Monday. Olympic boxing body thought to have sent home the Irish official as a result.

An Olympic official from Omagh has been embroiled in the controversy surrounding amateur boxing at this year's Olympic games in Rio.

That's after Michael Gallagher officiated on a heavily-criticised heavyweight bout on Monday evening between Russian boxer Eugeny Tischenko and Kazakh Vassily Levit.

Irish light Flyweight Paddy Barnes hit out strongly upon learning of Gallagher's involvement in the controversial Tischenko-Levit fight.

The fight was given in the Russian's favour but the result has been called into question in some quarters. That result came a day earlier than the much-publicised defeat of Ireland's Michael Conlan.

The County Tyrone man has since not appeared at the Games. It's thought he may have been sent home by the sport's governing body, the AIBA.

That's after the Olympic boxing body announced it had expelled a "handful" of officials.

Gallagher had found round one in favour of the fighter from Kazakhstan before awarding the second round to the Russian and eventual winner Tischenko. In a strange twist, he also deemed the Tischenko to have won the final round.

He'd previously been awarded as the AIBA "Best Judge & Referee" for 2011.
