Petrol bombs thrown at police during ‘disgraceful’ disorder in Londonderry

Police have been targeted with petrol bombs in what officers described as “orchestrated” and “disgraceful” disorder in Londonderry.

Violence flared in the Waterside area of Derry on Monday evening.

Around 7.30pm officers responded to reports that some 40-50 masked people – a mix of older and younger people, some of whom were armed with weapons – had gathered in the area and were heading towards playing fields in Knockwellan Park.

The PSNI said the group dispersed in different directions when officers arrived but the masked individuals stayed in the general area.

Police said they remained at the scene to engage with local community representatives in an attempt to defuse the situation and establish what had happened.

Some of those gathered then threw petrol bombs at officers and blocked a road with wheelie bins and other items.

Police said calm was restored around 10.30pm. They said no officers were injured and no further incidents were reported during the night.

PSNI Derry City and Strabane Superintendent Sinead McIldowney said: “The disorder last night was absolutely disgraceful.

“We believe this disorder was orchestrated, which is shameful as many of those involved have been described as young people. They are being used and exploited, and that is reprehensible.

“To the adults that were present last night and involved in the disorder, you are responsible for placing young people involved in danger. Last night there wasn’t just a risk to their safety, but to their future if they end up with a criminal record.

“Last night’s disorder is not welcomed or wanted by any right-thinking person, and shows the lack of respect by those involved for the community.

“It is not reflective of the amazing work that goes on by so many people every single day in communities across the city and district.

“To the local community, we know the disorder will have been very unsettling and frightening for many of you, but I want to reassure you you will see a heightened and visible police presence in the area.”

Ms McIldowney urged anyone with information or video footage of the events to come forward.
