Residents hit streets to crack down on burglaries

Bessbrook and Camlough residents have been hitting the streets to hit back against crime.

It follows a recent spate of break-ins and burglaries in the area.
The group meets at Camlough's Community House at 6pm each evening.
They then disperse in small groups to patrol estates in Bessbrook and Camlough, being vigilant of suspicious activity.
Newry District Commander Paul Reid says we can all play our part to reduce crime.

He gives this advice, "I'm asking those who are less vulnerable to look out for the more vulnerable, to keep an eye on each other's houses, to notice when something out of the ordinary happens.

And in the simplest way - when a white van turns up outside your elderly neighbour and you're not expecting that they have any work to do, then that's something that's unusual.

And I would encourage people that in those instances to report that unusual activity to the police."
