Teenager arrested following armed robbery in Belfast

A teenager has been arrested following an armed robbery in Belfast this afternoon. 

Staff were threatened by a man carrying a screw driver who entered a shop on Summerhill Avenue at around 2.45pm.   

He made off empty handed when they refused to open the till. 

An 18-year-old suspect was arrested nearby a short time later and is being questioned by police. 

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Detectives are appealing for witnesses following an armed robbery of a shop on Summerhill Avenue in east Belfast this afternoon, Saturday 06 June.

"It was reported that at around 2.45pm a male, carrying a screwdriver, entered the shop and threatened staff. 

"He demanded they open the till, however left empty handed when they refused. 

"He was described as wearing a grey coloured tracksuit with a hooded top and a black scarf covering his face.

 "An 18 year old male, matching the description was arrested a short distance away and has been taken to Musgrave Police Station for questioning.

"Detectives are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone with any information that can assist with the investigation to contact detectives in Musgrave Police Station on 101, quoting reference 896 06/06/20."
