Viable pipe bomb found in north Belfast security alert

Police have confirmed a viable pipe bomb was found during a security alert in north Belfast.

It was discovered yesterday while workmen were clearing drains in the Antrim Road area.

A number of homes had to be evacuated and roads shut.

Detective Inspector Paul Rowland said: “Police responded to a report of a suspicious object at around midday yesterday by workmen as they were clearing drains in the area. 

"An operation was immediately put in place to secure the area, with a section of the Antrim Road closed for a number of hours to ensure the safety of the public whilst enquiries were carried out. 

"ATO were tasked to the scene. 

"I want to thank the community for their patience and co-operation during yesterday’s operation as we are aware it caused significant disruption for drivers during a busy time of the day, and to a number of residents who were evacuated from their homes. 

"This was a reckless act by those responsible who showed blatant disregard for the community by leaving a viable device in a busy and built-up area. Thankfully, no one was injured. 

"The overwhelming number of people in the community do not want this type of activity and we, as a police service, will continue to work to bring those responsible before the courts.
