Victims of domestic abuse more comfortable coming forward - Lynch

Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA Sean Lynch met with the PSNI last week to discuss their efforts in tackling domestic violence.

Sinn Féin MLA Seán Lynch met with the PSNI on Friday of last week to have the discussions.

The assemblyman says he's "pleased" by news that more victims of abuse feel comfortable reporting it.

Speaking after a meeting with District Commander Jane Humphries, the Fermanagh/South Tyrone MLA said:

“Following recent meetings between Junior Minister Meagan Fearon, Women’s Aid and myself I met today with the PSNI to discuss their strategy for dealing with domestic violence," he said.

“Of particular concern is the reluctance to report domestic violence.  I was pleased to hear that officers have enhanced domestic abuse training so that they can effectively identify and handle cases when they arise," he added.

Mr. Lynch says he now wants to see a more "combined approach" when it comes to providing support and justice for victims.

“It is encouraging that victims of domestic abuse feel more comfortable with coming forward as a result of this strategy of the PSNI working alongside organisations like Women’s Aid.

“We need to see a combined approach across society to support all victims of domestic violence to come forward and access support and justice.”
