Young people attack police and fire fighters in North Belfast

Police officers and fire fighters came under attack by a group of young people in North Belfast last night.

Local police responded to an urgent call for assistance from a member of public in the New Lodge area at around 7:30pm.

Roads were barricaded with stolen industrial bins which were then set on fire.

It's understood that the incident became so dangerous that the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service had to withdraw from the area.

Whilst no officers were injured, a number of vehicles were damaged.

Chief Inspector Kelly Moore said: "The local community deserves better. Residents of north Belfast should not be subjected to these incidents of criminal and anti-social behaviour. Local police should be able to answer calls for assistance when the public most need us, and not come under attack from young people."

Police also responded to a number of reports of dangerous driving on cars and motorbikes in the area.
