Ulster captain Iain Henderson has been named on the British and Irish Lions squad for this summer's tour to South Africa.

He's one of eight Irish players on the 37-man panel for matches against the world champions in July and August.

It's a second tour for Henderson who also went to New Zealand with the Lions in 2017.

The 29-year-old's fellow second row Alun Wyn Jones is selected as tour captain.

The other Ireland forwards selected are Tadhg Beirne, Jack Conan, Tadhg Furlong and Andrew Porter with Bundee Aki, Robbie Henshaw and Conor Murray the three Irish backs.

Ireland out-half and skipper Johnny Sexton has been left out of Warren Gatland's tour party.

Sexton, the 2018 world player of the year, hasn't played since suffering a head injury in Leinster’s Champions Cup quarter-final win over Exeter last month.

It was the third time he had suffered a head injury since February.

Tour schedule

7 July: South Africa Invitational XV (Port Elizabeth)
