'Battle of the Bogside' images to be displayed in Ebrington

A series of iconic images showcasing the events that later became known at the Battle of the Bogside have gone on display in Derry – Londonderry.

Taken by photographer Gilles Caron the images have never before been displayed in Northern Ireland.

 Gilles Caron – In Colour includes 16 prints of people caught up in the events of August 1969.

Images from Paris Match, detailing a five-page photo-story of Caron’s visit to the city during an intense period of rioting, also feature.

Curator Declan Sheehan said:

“Caron became a legendary figure in the field of photojournalism following his death in 1970, and is regarded as one of the greatest photographers to have covered The Troubles.

“From 1965 to 1970 he made iconic photographs of a series of wars and social conflicts across the globe, creating mesmerizing images of individuals in instances of public and private drama. He was mainly known for shooting in black and white, so these colour photographs are a rare opportunity for visitors to see a new side of his work.”

The exhibition will run at the Nerve Visual Gallery in Ebrington until October 30^th.
