'White powder' in school alert was not hazardous

White powder sent to a school in South Belfast has been deemed 'non hazardous'.

Fire and Ambulance crews were called to Lagan College after envelopes were sent there on Tuesday morning.

Pupils and teachers were isolated to one part of the college during the alert.

It's understood a small number of people were exposed to the material in the college and were moved to another room as a precuation.

Worried parents recieved texts from the school and many showed up outside.

Pupils were allowed to leave the premesis on time despite much of the college being on lockdown throughout the school day.

The alert has now ended and emergency services have left the scene.

Chief Inspector Lorraine Dobson said: “The powder has been tested and has been described as not-hazardous.

“I would like to thank the teachers and pupils at the school for their co-operation.

“I would also like to thank our colleagues in the Fire and Ambulance Service for their assistance.
