They're the first council to introduce the new scheme, which is an attempt to reduce litter on the beaches.
A-boards with a holder for a litter-picker and a wind proof slot for waste bags are now available.
Warrenpoint and Newcastle will be the first beaches to introduce the scheme.
Following a successful review, it will be rolled out to other beaches in the district such as Tyrella and Cranfield.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick said,
“The 2 Minute Beach Clean is a great concept. The plastic and rubbish that is disposed-off or abandoned on our beaches, is harmful both to marine life and the coastal environment and I am proud that residents in our district have embraced the 2 Minute Beach Clean initiative.”
Councillor Fitzpatrick continued, “The concept had been introduced to the Council by the local ‘Love your Lough’ Environmental Group as part of The Clean Coast Programme lead by Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful. The Council is taking delivery of four ‘2 Minute Beach Clean Stations’ which are basically A-boards with a holder for a litter-picker and a wind proof slot for waste bags. The 2 minute beach clean would allow anyone who is out enjoying our coastline to do their small bit and help keep our beaches clean, so don’t forget to take a picture of the litter you collect and post it on social media using #2minutebeachclean”.
