20 year old man arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery in Belfast

A 20 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery in Belfast.

Shortly before 7pm last night staff and customers at a newsagents close to the upper end of the Cavehill Road in North Belfast intervened to stop two men who demanded money.

Both men has their faces covered and one of them was armed with a hammer - but noone was left injured.

The pair left the scene in a car which empty-handed in a car that had been reported as stolen the night before..

Police were able to track the car down in West Belfast a short time later and one man was arrested.

He's still in police custody.

Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area of the Cavehill shops yesterday evening and witnessed this robbery taking place to contact them on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 1142 of 11/5/1
