Two new all ability trikes have been launched at Castlewellan Forest Park, for people with limited abilities.

'Life Adventure', which is based in the Park's courtyard, has commissioned what's known as 'ICE trikes' which can be used on all the Park's trails.

They provide comfortable seats and roomier cockpits, easy steering as well as entry and exit, making it easier for people with limited mobility to control the trike themselves.

The special vehicles are also expedition tough, so they can be used on a variety of terrain and are adaptable for use by all age groups.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairman, Councillor Mark Murnin said,

“We are delighted to support this initiative which relies on the Council’s continuing commitment to maintain the Park’s facilities, including the bike trails.

"It is fantastic to see the local tourist and recreation businesses in our district investing in assets such as these, which ensure that everyone has an opportunity to get out there and experience the great outdoors.

“The trikes’ special features make it possible for the whole family to pedal Castlewellan’s trails regardless of a member’s age or ability.

"I want to encourage everyone to have a go to fully understand how adaptable and easy they are – if you can pedal then you can ride these trikes!

“It is vital we all take care of our physical and mental health. Exercise and fresh air is proven to help both, therefore the Council is pleased to support any initiative that makes this easier, especially for those who may have limited mobility or living with mental health issues.”

Speaking at the launch, Damien Russell, Fundraising Manager of MYMY added, “We have enjoyed cycling at Life Adventure Centre with a broad range of groups to date – both mental health and physical wellbeing.

"We welcome the opportunity to extend this to others through the accessibility of the trikes.”
