Anger boils over removal of Magherafelt flag

Anger has been expressed over the removal of the union flag in Magherafelt.

It's been taken down as part of the public realm scheme.

The flagpole was originally erected by the Orange Lodge.

It's stood in the town for 65 years.

Ulster Unionist Assembly Member Sandra Overend says it has caused upset to the unionist community.

“I am extremely disappointed to see the removal of the Union Flag from the centre of Magherafelt and I know that the unionist community of the town and the surrounding areas share these views,” she says.

“I have been in regular contact with the Londonderry County Grand Master regarding this issue, and I can understand the upset that this move has caused to the Magherafelt District Lodges and indeed to the wider unionist community.

“However, along with my party colleagues on the council, I am determined to continue to provide strong representation, working positively with local Orange representatives, and ensuring that unionist voices will continue to be heard,” she adds.
