Body of Daniel Rooney exhumed as part of investigation into Army unit

The PSNI has begun the process of exhuming the body of Daniel Rooney at Milltown Cemetery.

The 18-year-old was fatally shot in the St James Crescent area of west Belfast on 26 September, 1972.

A post-mortem wasn't carried out on the teenagers body at the time of his death, however hospital records show there was an entry but no exit wound from a bullet.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Neil McGuinness, said they hope to uncover any bullets that may remain in the grave:

A forensic team, which includes a forensic anthropologist and a pathologist, arrived at the Falls Road cemetery this morning.

It's part of a larger case examining the actions of the Army's Millitary Reaction Force which operated in Belfast in the early 1970's. 

The investigation was launched almost two years ago and is understood to encompass ten shootings during the Troubles. 

The wide-ranging probe was triggered after a referral by Northern Ireland's Director of Public Prosecutions Barra McGrory.
