A man has been arrested after a spate of burglaries and attempted break-ins prompted an air and land search.

It follows a number of incidents were reported in the Mallusk, Lakeview and Doagh Road areas of Newtownabbey overnight on Monday.

Detectives say the 29 year-old remains in their custody, and a police presence in the town has been intensified with increased patrols and vehicle checkpoints.

Detective Sergeant Emme Wallace is urging witnesses to get in touch, "I am appealing for anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity in the area during the early hours of [Monday] morning to contact detectives in Antrim on 101 quoting reference 1623 of 25/09/17.

She added, "I would like to take this opportunity to reassure members of the public in the Newtownabbey area that these incidents will be fully investigated. You will see an increased police presence in the area as detectives, supported by uniformed officers, will be conducting follow-up enquiries into these incidents."
