A fatal car crash has 'robbed society of three fine young men, an inquest has heard.

Conall Havern, and Gavin Sloan were 20 and Peter Hughes was 19 years old.

They were killed in a collision on 23 August last year.

The inquest at Newry Courthouse heard that the Queen's University students had been travelling at around 5:30 that night.

They were returning from a trip to Belfast to arrange university accommodation.

Their car struck standing water on the A1 dual carriageway between Banbridge and Dromore.

Witnesses spoke of  torrential rain that caused poor visibility and made driving conditions difficult.

Driver Peter Hughes tried to regain control but the car spun into the path of oncoming traffic.

The inquest heard that Jayne Donaghy was travelling towards Lisburn and couldn't avoid the car.

Other motorists, including two off duty police officers and a nurse stopped to help, but the friends died at the scene.

Ms Donaghy was treated in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
