The redevelopment of the Brandywell Stadium is due to start within weeks.
A contractor has been chosen to start the work.
It will see a new 4G pitch and new stands.
Karen McFarland, Director of Health and Communities with Derry City and Strabane District Council, updated council members on the project.
She explained that a provisional letter of intent had been issued to a preferred contractor.
She said: “Derry City and Strabane District Council is fully committed to this significant redevelopment project. It is a significant investment of around £6m that will improve the prospects and quality of life of citizens and have a positive impact on the regeneration of the Brandywell and wider area.”
