Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has officially opened the new Donaghaguy Reservoir on the outskirts of Warrenpoint.

It was recently upgraded as part of the Donaghaguy Environmental Improvement Upgrade Scheme.

The reservoir is stocked with trout and provides a focal point for local anglers and walkers.

At the official launch of the scheme, Newry, Mourne Down District Council Chairman, Councillor Mark Murnin said,

“I am delighted to be here to open this important upgrade to one of our most beautiful fishing facilities. Donaghaguy Reservoir, which is already a magnet for trout anglers, will now be able to accommodate more visitors, with more inclusive routes around the lake, as well as six new fishing stands on the lake itself.

"Our Macmillan Move More group is already taking advantage of these new paths, for the benefit of members.

“The Council is keen to promote our local sports facilities and Donaghaguy Reservoir is one of our most scenic and serene areas. I would encourage everyone to take advantage of this beautiful lake and all that it has to offer.”

As part of the upgrade scheme, six new build and fit fishing stands were constructed on the lake itself and perimeter pathways were improved. The major works were identified as part of the Council’s sports facility strategy.
