The heartbroken father of a 27-year-old man who died from taking killer drug Xanax at the weekend has made an emotional appeal on the day of his son's funeral...

Karl Wilgar, who had been living in north Belfast, was pronounced dead in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Distraught dad Michael says Xanax is 50 times more potent than heroin and his son didn't stand a chance.

The Bangor builder wants a national emergency declared to deal with what he says is a drugs epidemic that threatens to wipe out a generation.

Karl's funeral is taking place at Garnerville Presbyterian Church this morning.

His father doesn't want other families to suffer from the scourge of hard drugs...

The drug that my son got very quickly addicted to, which ended his life is a drug called Xanax/streetXanax, a drug that is 50 times more potent than heroin. My son with the way he was didn't stand a chance. Many people have replied on my Facebook post telling of how they have lost their loved ones recently under the same circumstances. Right now in Belfast and around the country there is now an epidemic striking at the vulnerable and robbing them of their life. All the while, our so-called politicians sit at home doing nothing on full pay while the police force is short-staffed and can not cope. There is something seriously wrong. Who on here would abandon their responsibility as not only a public servant but also as a decent human being, sit at home and accept a pay packet when your country needs you more than ever. Our MP 's are much worse than a joke,
My son Karl said to me a couple of years ago that he would eventually like to become a counsellor and help others with drugs problems. After speaking to some of his close friends, I discovered he had already helped others with their drug problems. It's too late for my son Karl and the others who have died. It need not be too late for others. I need your help to demand action so that a national emergency is declared and warnings of the dangers of these drugs are widespread. The people deserve to know.
The Belfast Telegraph has been in touch and will be running a feature on the subject.
