Tributes to Down All-Ireland winner Joe Lennon

Down GAA All-Ireland winner and captain Joe Lennon has died.

The former footballer from Aghaderg who was eighty-one passed away last night.
Joe played for Down's senior team, winning three all-Ireland titles, in 1960, 61, and in 68 when he captained the team.

Down GAA secretary Sean Og McAteer has paid tribute to 'a remarkable man'.

In a statement on its website, Down GAA expressed its condolences:

"It is with great sadness that Down GAA have learned this evening of the death of Joe Lennon All Ireland winner in 1960,61 and captain of our All Ireland winning team of 1968. We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Anne and the entire family circle."

Warrenpoint GAA tweeted, "With great sadness we hear of the death of Joe Lennon All Ireland winner 60,61 & captain of 68 All Ireland team. May he rest in peace#legend."

Joe's former club, St Patricks GAA in County Meath, wrote this upon hearing of his death, "It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Mr. Joe Lennon. Joe was a former chairman, player, mentor and esteemed member of St. Patricks as well as being a 3 time All Ireland winner with his native Down in 60,61 and 68, when he was captain. We extend our deepest sympathies to the Lennon family at this sad time. As a mark of respect tonight's planned AGM is now postponed until further notice. At dheis de go raibh a anam dilis."
