Investigation launched following death in custody at Maghaberry Prison

A 47-year-old inmate has died at Maghaberry Prison. 

His death is not being treated as Covid related.

The prisoner died this morning and his next of kin have been informed.

Director General of the Northern Ireland Prison Service, Ronnie Armour, has offered his condolences to the grieving relatives of the deceased. 

"I would like to extend my sympathy, and that of the Northern Ireland Prison Service, to the family of the prisoner.'' he said. 

''My thoughts are with them at this difficult time."

The  PSNI, Coroner and Prisoner Ombudsman have launched investigations into the death.
