LISTEN: Appeal for information after man stabs mum and girlfriend in Newtownabbey

Flowers have been left on the lane of a house where two bodies were discovered in Newtownabbey last night.

Police responded to a report of a knife attack at a flat on Derrycoole Way just before a 11pm when they found a woman dead. 

A short time later a woman and man were discovered dead at a house on Glenville Road.

Detectives believe the man stabbed his mother and girlfriend in a double murder-suicide. 

MLA and policing board member John Blair says there's disbelief following what has been described as 'brutal' killings.    

“This is a sad and shocking set of circumstances,” said the Alliance representative. 

“My thoughts and sympathies are with the families concerned in what they are going through at this time.

"There is a sense of shock in the wider Newtownabbey community upon hearing this tragic news.

“Police have appealed for information and I’d ask anyone who can help with their enquiries to contact them immediately."

Detectives investigating the double murder say they are linked and they are not looking for anyone else.

Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell said police received a report of a stabbing incident at a residential property in the Derrycoole Way area shortly before 11pm.

Police and the ambulance service were called to the scene where a woman was found dead.

“As officers carried out further inquiries, they attended a residential property in the Glenville Road area,” DCI Caldwell added.

“An unconscious man was located in the property.

“Despite the provision of first aid, the man was pronounced dead.

“On searching the property, another deceased woman was located.

“While we have launched a murder investigation, we are not looking for anyone else in connection with these incidents which we believe are connected.”

Police have appealed for people with information to contact 101.
