Derry City and Strabane District Council (DCSDC) has granted planning permission for the development of land west of the Buncrana Road, referred to as the H2 zone in Derry-Londonderry.
It's to be used for a residential development that will include a mix housing, local community facilities, open space, cycle/pedestrian routes and vehicular access, a primary school, drainage and other infrastructure.
The application was made by Pragma Planning and Development Consultants Ltd on behalf of Coredale Management Ltd.
Members of the Planning Committee were informed that the entire zoning could accommodate up to 3,500 mixed housing homes, broken down into two phases.
Phase 1 will see the construction of to 1650 homes and Phase 2 will see up to 1850 homes.
Local Councillor Tony Hassan has welcomed the project and says it's an important development for the Derry City and Strabane district and that it may help the areas homeless problem:
The councilor has also welcomed news that consultants have begun work on a new junction strategy and environmental surveys in connection with a proposed carriageway along the length of the Buncrana Road.
"The upgrading of the A2 Buncrana Road will also help the regeneration of the area as the Buncrana Road is not capable of taking the volume of traffic that uses it on a daily basis.
"It could help solve the problems that face residents who live at the junctions of the Collon, Templegrove, Woodbrook, and Whitehouse park areas of the city."
