Man and women assaulted in sectarian attack, police say

A man and woman, both in their 30s have been assaulted by a group of young people, in a sectarian hate crime in, police have confirmed.

It happened in the North Queen Street area , in Belfast city centre, shortly after 3pm on Monday.

Both victims sustained injuries which are not believed to be serious. 

Damage was also caused to a white Seat Leon car parked nearby at the time.

Police are appealing for information on the incident 

Chief Inspector Kelly Moore said: “Shortly after 3pm, it was reported that a group of young people were in the North Queen Street area when one of the males caused damage to a white Seat Leon car which was parked nearby.

“One man aged in his 30s who was in the area was assaulted by several people from the group. He sustained injuries not believed to be serious. This incident is being treated as a sectarian hate crime.

“Another woman aged in her 30s who was in the area was also assaulted. Her injuries are not believed to be serious.

“Enquiries are continuing and we would appeal to anyone who was in the North Queen Street area at the time of the incident or who may have dash-cam footage available to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 1256 24/08/20.
