Two pensioners die in separate collisions in Northern Ireland

A pensioner who died in a Co Down crash yesterday has been named as Beryl Carson.

The 87-year-old, from the Inverary area of east Belfast, was the passenger of a black Citroen C3 which collided with another car on the Portaferry Road in Kircubbin yesterday.

The crash, which involved a silver Lexus, happened at around 2pm.

Ms Carson was taken to hospital but died as a result of her injuries.

The female driver and three children were also taken to hospital for treatment to injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.

The woman who was driving the other other car suffered minor injuries.

Police are appealing for information. 

Meanwhile a man in his 80s has died following a four vehicle road traffic collision in Cookstown. 

It is understood the victim was a well known business man from the town. 

The crash on the Drum Road was reported at around 5.10pm yesterday evening and involved a black Mini car, a Volvo lorry, a Mercedes Goods vehicle and a Renault Kangoo. 

The pensioner who was driving the Mini was treated at the scene but passed away as a result of his injuries. 

The Drum Road was closed as officers attended the scene but it has since reopened.

Inspector Irvine said, “Our enquiries are continuing and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident or who has dash-cam footage available, to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 1406 27/08/20.”
