A 19-year-old man has been killed after he was hit by a train on the main line between Portadown and Belfast.

It happened at Bells Row in Lurgan at around 6.30am this morning.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: "Police can confirm that the man has tragically died from his injuries. There are no further details."

The route was left shut through rush hour as emergency services, including the air ambulance, were called to the scene.

It has since reopened.

SDLP Upper Bann MLA Dolores Kelly has said the local community is devastated: "It has been confirmed that a man was struck by a train in the early hours this morning in Lurgan.

"While the police are continuing their investigations I want to offer the thoughts and prayers of the SDLP to those affected at this very difficult time."

A Translink spokesperson said: "Due to the timing of this incident, securing bus substitution services has been challenging causing disruption to some customers’ morning commute.

"Valid rail tickets were accepted on scheduled bus services.

"Staff worked to restore rail services as quickly as possible between Belfast and Moira and are establishing bus substitution services between Moira and Portadown.

"Cross border passengers are being bussed between Belfast and Newry for onward rail connections.

"We appreciate this incident is causing disruption for our customers and would apologise for the inconvenience caused.

"We are currently working with the PSNI to investigate this incident".
