Two men from Italy are being held on suspicion of trying to murder a Liverpool fan ahead of last night's Champions League clash with Roma at Anfield.

A 53-year-old's in a critical condition.

Witnesses say the man - who's believed to be from Ireland - fell to the ground after being hit with a belt near a pub around ten minutes before kick-off.

Police have described what happened as an "altercation" between fans - and have arrested a 25-year-old and 26-year-old.

The victim's being treated for a head injury.

Liverpool Football Club say they'll be offering him and his family their full support
