Police have launched a murder investigation following the death of a 53-year-old woman in East Belfast.

Her body was discovered in a property in the Whincroft Way area on Sunday evening.

A 42-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

The PSNI's major investigations team say they're investigating the circumstances surrounding the woman's death.

Detective Chief Inspector Eamon Corrigan said: "A postmortem examination will take place in due course, but I am treating her death as murder at this time.

"I am appealing for anyone who was in the area of Whincroft Way yesterday, and who witnessed anything, or anyone with any information who can help my investigation, to get in touch with detectives on 101."

Local residents who also live in the Whincroft Way area told Q Radio they were shocked by the news:
