New legislation to allow special events to be held on roads has now come into force.
Previously only the PSNI had authority to close roads using general policing powers.
This legislation now gives power to the relevant authority to authorise and approve, by order, the holding of a special event such as a street party or sporting event on a road.
In most cases authority will be the local district or borough council, though the Depart for Infrastructure will be responsible for the closure of motorways.
Those hoping to apply to hold an event should contact their local council.
