Nine further Covid-19 deaths recorded in past 24 hours

Nine people have died as a result of Covid-19 in Northern Ireland in the past 24 hours, according to the latest figures from the Department of Health.

The latest update from the department also shows that a further 1,472 people have tested positive for the virus in the same period.

Currently, there are 418 people in hospital with the virus, of whom 46 are being treated in intensive care.

So far, 2,449,587 vaccines have been administered.

The latest update on deaths and positive cases here comes after a scheduled meeting of the power-sharing administration on Wednesday was cancelled after deputy First Minister Michelle O’Neill tested positive for Covid-19.

DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has said the Stormont Executive must meet as soon as possible to take further decisions on Covid-19 measures.

“I understand that the deputy First Minister because she is unwell at the moment cannot attend the executive, but there are key decisions that need to be made and I want those decisions to be made as soon as possible,” said Sir Jeffrey.

“People need to know where we’re going. For example, in relation to our response on Covid, on economic recovery, our schools are back, so what’s happening there? And we need a cohesive, coherent approach from the executive, so the sooner we can meet the better, and I’m making that absolutely clear.”
