Parents urged to be vigilant over Halloween

Fire and Rescue officers are asking parents to be extra vigilant at tonight's celebrations.

Last year 13 Halloween casualties out of 18 were under 18 years-old.
Newry Fire and Rescue commander Rod O'Hare says attending organised events is the safest way to enjoy the evening
He says we should make ourselves aware of potential dangers:

"The thing that people are possibly not terribly familiar with is that the tip of a sparkler burns at a similar temperature to the tip of a welding torch. Now we're not going to hand that to our kids so we need to consider what we're giving to the children and make sure that when we're doing it we're doing it safely and under some degree of supervision."

He added, "We've got to understand that when we're using fireworks, sparklers and bonfires there's always a relative degree of inherent danger. We're just trying to reiterate the message that everyone's aware of and we want it to be a night of treats not tragedies."
