A pensioner has been left "badly shaken" after being targetted in an aggravated burglary in County Down.

It happened last night on the Downshire Road in Holywood shortly before 11 o'clock.

Police say 2 to 3 men pulled the 70 year old victim from his bed and then tied him up with cables.

He was then dragged down a flight of stairs.

One of the men claimed to have a weapon and demanded money.

A neighbour came to the house and raised the alarm and the burglars then fled the scene

In a statementement police said:

“The NIAS attended and treated the victim at the scene. Although not physically hurt in the incident, he was left very badly shaken. A mobile phone and a cordless landline phone were stolen from the house, which we believe may have been done to prevent the householder calling for help.

“A 32-year-old man was arrested a short time later on suspicion of aggravated burglary. This afternoon we arrested a 25-year-old man on suspicion of aggravated burglary with intent to steal. Both men have been released on bail, pending further enquiries.

“We are appealing for anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the area of the Downshire Road or Spencer Street areas of Holywood between 10.30 - 11pm last night to get in contact with detectives in Bangor on the non-emergency police number 101, quoting reference number 1489 of 11/5/18.

“Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives the people the power to speak up and stop crime.”
