Police were attending a security alert when they were attacked

By Q Radio news

Police were attacked by youths throwing petrol bombs last night during a security alert in Derry/Londonderry.

Trouble flared yesterday as the PSNI and army dealt with a suspicious object left on the Skeoge Road.

Police urged local residents to stay indoors and called for anyone from outside the area to leave immediately.

The object was later declared an elaborate hoax.

It came after a series of vehicle hijackings on Tuesday evening.

The PSNI'S Derry City and Strabane Twitter account tweeted that officers on Skeoge Road had petrol bombs thrown at them from Galliagh Park.

Local residents were urged to remain indoors during the incident.

Local Councillor Aileen Mellon said, “My thoughts are with those impacted by these attacks and the people of Galliagh who are crying out for this activity to stop."
