The charity Air Ambulance has been drafted in by police to deal with what has been described as 'an incident' at a West Belfast cemetery.
Officers sealed off the entrance to Milltown Cemetery shortly before 3pm on Thursday afternoon.
Investigations continued inside for some time as other emergency teams attended.
A short PSNI statement read: "Police are currently in attendance of an incident at the Milltown Cemetery in west Belfast this afternoon.
"There are no further details at this stage."
Q Radio understands the investigations are centred around the serious injury of a man, believed to be a senior republican figure.
Speculation was rife on social media that a gun had been used.
