Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is encouraging householders to ‘recycle right’ by making the most of their recycling bins.

The campaign is funded by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) and includes a recycling guide and other advice delivered to residents to help them recycle effectively.

Speaking about the ‘recycle right’ campaign, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Roisin Mulgrew said,

“While most people in our community recycle, research suggests that there is still some confusion about how to do it right.

"We are recycling more food and dry recyclable waste than ever before and we want to encourage our residents to maximise their recycling efforts.

“Increasing our recycling will save money on waste processing, which can potentially be spent on other Council services. We appreciate the continued efforts that all our residents make with regard to recycling and hope they will find the guide useful and informative. I am certain that this campaign will be a success.”

During April, residents may see new stickers on their blue and black bins which indicate clearly what materials can be recycled.

This week, householders will also receive an easy guide to all the recycling facilities in the district including blue and brown bins, household recycling centres and recycling bring sites.

As part of the campaign, the Council is emphasising that residents should not place food or dry recyclable waste in their black bins and that recycling, wherever possible, should be considered first.
