A security alert in Limavady has been declared a hoax.

Army bomb experts were called in following the discovery of a suspected pipe bomb at 11:50am today.

Dozens of homes were evacuated, however residents have since been allowed to return.

Councillor Brenda Chivers has condemned those behind the incident.

The Roe Valley Leisure Centre was made available as a rest centre.

A number of cordons were also put in place in the Roe Mill Road/Ballyquin Road area.

Councillor Chivers has condemned those responsible for the disruption.

Speaking from the scene Councillor Chivers said: "A number of homes have been evacuated after a suspicious object was discovered in the Woodland Walk area of Limavady and the area was sealed off.

"This is senseless behaviour and shows little regard for the community, our key workers, emergency services and health workers and comes at a time when people are already dealing with very stressful situations.

“Those responsible for these incidents have absolutely nothing to offer our society. These actions need to end immediately.

"Roe Valley Leisure Centre has been made available for any residents who need it.

"This is the second such incident in a matter of days and is an unacceptable disruption to residents.

“I appeal for anyone with any information to bring it forward to the PSNI."

Inspector O’Brien said: “Police received a report shortly after 11:50am on Saturday 14th November of a suspicious object in the area.

"Officers and ATO attended and the object, which has been declared as an elaborate hoax has been taken away for further forensic examinations.

"A number of residents who had been evacuated from their homes have been allowed to return.

“I would like to thank the local community and especially those directly impacted for their patience and understanding while police worked to make the area safe.

“Police are now working to establish the circumstances surrounding this incident and would appeal to anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in the area, should contact them on 101 quoting reference number 601 14/11/20."
