A package which contained sulphuric acid was delivered to the offices of an Irish newspaper.
The Sunday World has reported the package was sent from Spain to their offices in the Republic of Ireland and contained sulphuric acid both in a bottle and also loose inside the package.
It is understood the package was labelled as "sulphuric acid" and was addressed to a former staff member.
It has been removed by gardai for analysis.
The paper said there was no note in the package, only a sheet which detailed the chemical make-up of the substance.
The package was delivered to the offices of Independent News and Media at the end of last month.
The Sunday World has offices in Dublin and Belfast.
A Garda spokesman said officers are investigating the incident.
"Gardai in Store Street are carrying out inquiries following the delivery of a package to a business premises on Talbot Street, Dublin," he said.
"The package which contained a sealed bottle was delivered to the premises late last month and removed by gardai for analysis."
