Police are currently at the scene  of a security alert in Belfast.

It's understood a suspicious object was discovered in the front garden of house  in the Roseleigh Street area.

A number of homes have been evacuated and a number of roads have also been closed, while cordons are in place.

There are no further details at this stage.

Meanwhile, SDLP Councillor for the area Paul McCusker says a local centre has opened up, to offer residents a place to go until the alert ends.

“Residents in the Roseleigh street area of the city have been evacuated from their homes following the discovery of a pipe bomb-type device in the front garden of a house.

“Sacred Heart Parish Centre in Glenview Street has been opened for those affected as an emergency rest centre.

“I will be liaising with senior police to ensure that the area is made safe as soon as possible and residents can return to their homes.

“This is the last thing that people in this part of our city want or need.”
