Bessbrook toddler killed in car accident to be laid to rest

A three year-old toddler, tragically killed after he was hit by a car in County Armagh, is to be laid to rest today.

The Bessbrook community's still in shock since the accident on Friday.

Police say the boy, named locally as Christopher Ward, died from his injuries in hospital.

The funeral will take place at Saints Peter and Paul's Church in Bessbrook, this afternoon at 1pm.

Expressing his sympathies, Newry and Armagh MLA Justin McNulty said, "This is a complete tragedy, one that will be felt by the entire community. Our thoughts, prayers and sincere condolences are with the deceased, his family and community at this very difficult time."

Council chairperson Roisin Mulgrew said, "This tragic incident has sent shockwaves throughout the community, and the loss will be felt in every home in the area, but not least with the grieving family."

She continued, "My thoughts are with his family and friends over the coming weeks and months as they come to terms with this tragedy, as will those of every citizen in the area."

Slieve Gullion councillor David Taylor expressed his condolences saying, "I am very sorry to hear of the tragic passing of the young boy fatally injured in a traffic accident.

"This is a heartbreaking incident which has no doubt left his family distraught and has come as a great shock to the entire local community. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very sad time and I hope and trust they will find the necessary strength to cope with their grief over the difficult days which lie ahead."
