Heavy snow showers have fallen over northern and western counties of Northern Ireland overnight.

Motorists are being advised to display caution and leave extra time for journeys.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning of snow and lightning, in force until 8pm today, for Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Forecasters say that frequent heavy snow showers are expected, along with very gusty winds and a chance of frequent lightning affecting some places.

Cancellations in some travel services, as well as power cuts, may occur.

It also says that temperatures across Northern Ireland and Scotland are expected to drop sharply, with frequent heavy and blustery showers arriving from the Atlantic.

It states:

“The showers will be accompanied by strong, blustery winds, with gusts of 45-55mph possible, and a chance of 65mph on coasts.

"Blizzard conditions are likely over higher ground.

“There is a small chance that some of the showers could be accompanied by frequent lightning, which could impact power supplies, including some places outside of the warning area.

“Snow showers are increasingly likely to turn back to rain and sleet at low levels later Thursday morning and early afternoon, although remaining as snow above 200-300 metres.”

In England in Bewdley, Worcestershire, search and rescue crews were out checking properties and speaking to residents yesterday after temporary flood defences were breached following heavy rainfall on Tuesday afternoon.

The River Severn peaked in the town yesterday afternoon but levels are expected to remain high for a prolonged period and a severe flood warning, meaning a danger to life, is still in place.
