A woman has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a toddler in Dublin.

The three year old was found at an apartment block in the Poddle Park area of Kimmage, near Crumlin on Monday evening.

His mother was taken to hospital with serious injuries and required emergency surgery.

Gardaí say a woman in her early 40s was arrested this morning and is being held at Crumlin Garda Station.

Forensic examinations were carried out at the scene yesterday.

The child and woman are understood to be of Iranian decent, who have been living at the complex for a number of years.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who was in the area between 5.00pm on Sunday July 9th and 7.00pm on Monday July 10th to contact them.
